We handweave hammocks on looms, in Colombia

Hamacas Artesanales was born from a simple belief: hand-loom weaving is a craft that deserves to stay alive, and the people who keep it going deserve to be able to make a living from it. Every hammock we sell comes from two places: our own workshop in Medellín and the hands of weaving families on Colombia's Caribbean coast, where this craft has continued unbroken for generations.

The Medellín workshop

It all started with the workshop my father founded. It's still running, and it's home to a group of men and women who are heads of their households: people for whom this craft isn't a hobby but what supports an entire home.

That shapes how we work. We don't produce for a seasonal catalog or push volume: we weave what sells, we pay for the work that was done, and we keep the workshop open all year round.

The weavers of the coast

Many of our hammocks come from weaving towns on Colombia's Caribbean coast, places where the loom is a living heritage and where the craft has been passed from mothers to daughters for generations.

Many families make their living this way, and for several of them each order means real work this very week.

The craft

None of our hammocks are mass-produced. The process starts at the loom and moves forward thread by thread: depending on the complexity of the design, a piece takes between 1 and 15 business days to weave, and those with special dimensions or customization can take up to 30 calendar days, about a month. The macramé finishes are hand-tied, one by one.

That's why no two hammocks are identical. Slight variations in tone or weave aren't defects: they're the signature of human work, and the reason a handwoven piece stands apart from an industrial one the moment you touch it.

The materials

We weave with 100% natural cotton. It's a breathable fiber that gets softer with use instead of wearing out, and it holds weight without losing its shape. We choose quality raw materials over production speed, because a well-woven hammock gets handed down.

What's behind every purchase

When you choose a handcrafted hammock, you're not just getting a beautiful, long-lasting product: you're also supporting the local economy and helping preserve an invaluable tradition. Every order supports a head-of-household family in Medellín or a weaver on the coast, and keeps alive a technique that would otherwise be lost.

Where we are and how far we reach

Our workshop is in Medellín, Antioquia. We ship throughout Colombia via Interrapidísimo and Servientrega, and we ship internationally to bring Colombian tradition anywhere in the world.

If you'd like a piece in special dimensions, a specific color or a custom design, write to us: much of what we weave starts with a conversation.
